The Biggest Transition of the Working Year is Coming

Diverse group of employees and leaders representing an inclusive, family-friendly workplace, supported by Parent & Professional career coaching through key career and life transitions.

Our calendars tell us that January is the start of a new year. It’s when we set goals, make resolutions and look ahead to what’s next.

For working parents, however, September often feels like the real new beginning.

Children start school for the first time, move into new year groups or make the leap to secondary school. New routines, childcare arrangements, after-school activities and family logistics all need to fall into place, often within the space of a few days.

At the same time, parents are returning from a summer spent juggling childcare, annual leave and family commitments, just as work begins to gather pace again. Projects restart, teams return from holiday and attention quickly shifts to the final quarter of the year.

For many families, September is both exciting and overwhelming. It represents one of the biggest transitions of the year, yet it’s rarely recognised as such in the workplace.

Why Transitions Matter

At Parent & Professional, we believe that employees don’t simply need support when they’re facing a crisis. They need support during the moments of change that shape how they experience work.

We call these Moments That Matter.

Whether it’s becoming a parent, caring for loved ones, navigating unexpected life events or adjusting to midlife changes, these transitions can influence confidence, wellbeing, engagement and career progression.

September is one of those moments.

It may not receive the same attention as maternity leave or returning to work, but for many families it represents a significant period of adjustment. Parents aren’t simply buying new uniforms or packing school bags. They’re helping anxious children settle into new environments, adapting to new routines, coordinating childcare and managing an invisible mental load, all while continuing to perform at work.

Individually, these challenges may seem manageable. Together, they can become a tipping point.

Supporting the Moments That Matter

This is why recognising life’s transitions is so important.

September sits at the intersection of two of our Moments That Matter: Caring for Others and Navigating Change. Parents are supporting their children through a significant life event while navigating major changes in their own daily routines and responsibilities.

These transitions may be temporary, but their impact can be long-lasting. When employees feel unsupported during periods of change, stress, reduced confidence and burnout can begin to affect both wellbeing and performance.

Conversely, when organisations recognise these moments and provide the right support, employees are better equipped to adapt, remain engaged and continue developing their careers.

Our Moments That Matter framework recognises that these life transitions don’t happen in isolation. Throughout a career, employees experience many moments that influence their confidence, resilience and ability to thrive. By recognising and supporting these transitions, organisations create more inclusive, family-friendly workplaces where people feel valued throughout every stage of their career journey.

Coaching Makes a Difference

One of the most effective ways organisations can support employees through these transitions is by providing the space to pause, reflect and prepare for change.

Our coaching helps employees step back from the immediate pressures of work and family life and develop practical strategies that work for them. Whether it’s establishing new routines, managing competing priorities, setting healthy boundaries or rebuilding confidence after a demanding summer, coaching enables people to move forward with purpose, strengthen their resilience and build sustainable ways of balancing work, family and career.

In doing so, it supports not only employee wellbeing but also long-term engagement, career progression and organisational success.
