Let’s raise awareness about the Andropause in the workplace

Our primary goal this International Men’s Day is to raise awareness about the Andropause in the workplace. As we strive for greater workplace inclusivity and support, it’s essential to address the health challenges that employees may face at different stages of life. While much attention has been given to menopause in women, the Andropause, is a significant yet often overlooked issue affecting middle-aged and older men. In this blog, we explore what the Andropause is, its potential impact on the workplace and how employers and employees can work together to navigate this phase with understanding and support.
Understanding the Andropause
The Andropause is a real and natural biological process. Whilst testosterone levels in men do fall by about 1% per year from their mid-thirties, this fall is not dramatic enough to cause the kinds of symptoms that the sharper decline in progesterone and oestrogen causes in women. The Andropause does manifest itself with some similar symptoms as the menopause, hence the confusion.
Recognising symptoms in the workplace
While the Andropause affects each man differently, there are common symptoms that may manifest in the workplace. These include reduced energy and productivity, mood swings, memory issues and physical challenges. Employers and colleagues should be attentive to these signs and create a supportive space for open communication.
Breaking the stigma
Addressing Andropause requires breaking through the stigma and encouraging open conversations about men’s health. By promoting a culture of acceptance, employees can feel more comfortable seeking help and support, leading to a happier and more engaged workforce.
Accommodations and flexibility
Employers can take proactive steps to accommodate employees experiencing the Andropause. Offering flexible work arrangements, adjusting physical spaces and providing access to wellness programmes can significantly improve the well-being of affected employees.
Awareness initiatives for men’s health
Implementing awareness initiatives for men’s health is a proactive and beneficial approach that can have a positive impact on the well-being of all male employees, regardless of whether they are currently experiencing the Andropause or not. Such initiatives can go beyond simply addressing the Andropause and encompass a broader spectrum of men’s health concerns.
Educating employees and managers about Andropause
To foster understanding, employers should provide educational resources about the Andropause for all employees. Additionally, training managers to recognise the symptoms and respond with empathy can create a more compassionate workplace environment.
Supporting career growth and age diversity
Age should never be a barrier to career growth. Encouraging age diversity and recognising the value of experience can help combat age-related discrimination and boost the confidence of male employees going through the Andropause.
Encouraging self-care and seeking help
Men often hesitate to seek medical help or discuss health issues. Employers can promote self-care and regular health check-ups while reassuring employees that seeking medical assistance is a sign of strength, not weakness.
As we strive for a more inclusive and supportive workplace, it’s crucial to recognise the unique health challenges that male employees may face. By understanding the Andropause, breaking the stigma, and implementing supportive policies, employers can create a workplace culture where every employee feels valued and cared for.
To assist HR, L&D and DE&I teams in providing enhanced support and empower individuals with knowledge, we have developed a workplace guide. Download: “Navigating Andropause in the Workplace: A Guide for Employers and Employees” – it can be found at the bottom of the page.
