The Working Families Benchmark, which captured insights from over 402,000 employees, provides invaluable data about what leading employers are doing right.

Here’s our take on the key findings and how businesses can build on these achievements to make family-friendly workplaces the norm rather than the exception.

A New Standard for Recruitment

One of the standout findings is that 85% of Benchmark employers carry out a job analysis on some or all roles to determine the options for flexible working prior to advertising.

This proactive approach to flexibility signals a shift in how organisations think about work design. It’s not just about accommodating requests but embedding flexibility into the DNA of how roles are structured. At P&P, we see this as a crucial step in attracting and retaining talent, especially working parents and carers who value adaptability in their work schedules.

Flexible working also unlocks access to a broader, more diverse talent pool. By advertising roles with clear flexible options, employers show that they understand the realities of modern life and are willing to meet employees where they are.

Empowering Managers to Lead the Way

The benchmark reveals that 90% of Benchmark entrants provide training for managers to develop and lead flexible teams, up from 84% in 2023.This rise is a testament to the critical role managers play in creating inclusive and family-friendly workplaces.

At P&P, we know that flexibility doesn’t thrive in a vacuum. It requires managers who understand how to balance trust, accountability, and communication in a way that empowers their teams. Training managers to navigate these complexities builds confidence and ensures consistency, so flexibility works for everyone—not just a select few.

The Power of Role Modelling

Encouragingly, 96% of benchmarked employers actively encourage managers to model flexible and family-friendly working practices.

When leaders visibly embrace flexibility, whether it’s working reduced hours, leaving early for family commitments, or taking advantage of remote working, they send a clear message that these practices are both accepted and encouraged.

This is something we often emphasise in our coaching programmes: the power of role modelling. When employees see their managers prioritising family-friendly practices, it breaks down stigmas and normalises the behaviour across the organisation.

Strategic Planning for Lasting Impact

The fact that 96% of benchmark employers have strategic plans for family-friendly working demonstrates how far we’ve come in embedding these practices into workplace culture. At P&P, we believe strategic planning is key to creating sustainable change.

This aligns closely with the findings in our recent blog, Employee Benefit Trends to Watch in 2025: Why Family-Friendly Workplaces Are Leading the Way. We highlighted five core benefit packages trending in 2025 and why Family-Friendly Benefits are in the spotlight. Strategic planning ensures that these benefits are not only achievable but measurable.

Celebrating Progress, Aiming for More

The achievements of the Top Ten Employers for Working Families 2024 show what is possible when organisations commit to supporting their people. However, the work doesn’t stop here.

For organisations that didn’t make the list, the benchmark findings provide a roadmap for improvement. Starting with small steps, like conducting job analysis for flexible working or offering manager training, can create a ripple effect that transforms workplace culture over time.

At P&P, we’re here to help employers on this journey. Whether you’re looking to enhance your family-friendly culture, support working parents and carers, or develop managers to lead with empathy and inclusivity, we can provide the tools and guidance you need.

The Future of Family-Friendly Workplaces

Reflecting on this year’s benchmark, we are inspired by the progress employers are making. Employers are increasingly recognising that supporting their people isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s essential for attracting and retaining top talent, boosting employee wellbeing, and driving business success.

Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to share that in 2025, we’ll release a new report titled The Future of Work is Family-Friendly. This comprehensive study will explore how organisations can deepen their commitment to family-friendly practices and highlight the long-term benefits, from improved employee wellbeing to enhanced diversity and inclusion.

We congratulate this year’s top employers and look forward to seeing even more organisations join their ranks in the years to come. If you’re ready to take the next step in creating a workplace where employees can thrive professionally and personally, we’d love to partner with you. Let’s build a brighter future for working families together.
