Supporting Working Carers in the Insurance Sector
Behind every workplace is a growing group of employees balancing their careers with caring responsibilities.
They may be supporting an ageing parent, caring for a partner, raising a child with additional needs or helping a close family member through illness. For many, these responsibilities are undertaken quietly alongside demanding jobs, often without colleagues or managers fully understanding the pressures they face.
The reality is that more of us will become carers than we realise.
As people live longer and families become increasingly diverse, caring is no longer a niche issue. It is a workforce issue, a wellbeing issue and, increasingly, a business issue.
For organisations across the insurance sector, understanding how to support working carers is becoming an essential part of creating inclusive, high-performing workplaces.
Why working carers matter
Many employees don’t identify themselves as carers. They simply see themselves as daughters, sons, partners, parents or friends doing what needs to be done.
The impact, however, can be significant.
Balancing appointments, emergencies, financial decisions and emotional pressures alongside work can lead to stress, burnout and difficult career choices. Without the right support, talented employees may reduce their hours, decline progression opportunities or leave the organisation altogether.
When employers create environments where carers feel understood and supported, everyone benefits. Employees are better able to balance work and caring responsibilities, while organisations see improved wellbeing, stronger engagement, increased loyalty and better retention of experienced talent.
Building workplaces in the insurance sector where carers can thrive
Supporting working carers isn’t about having one perfect policy.
It’s about creating a culture where conversations are encouraged, managers feel confident to respond with empathy, and employees know they can access practical support without fear of judgement.
That might include:
- Flexible ways of working
- Manager training and confidence-building
- Coaching and wellbeing support
- Employee networks and peer support
- Open conversations that normalise caring responsibilities
When these elements come together, organisations create workplaces where people don’t have to choose between their career and those who depend on them.
